Location: Rooftop of Armila Hotel, Souq Waqif, Qatar
Execution Time: Completed in only one and a half months
Project Overview
The Al Matbakh Restaurant project transformed an abandoned rooftop into a luxurious dining venue in the heart of Souq Waqif, harmonizing modern engineering with heritage preservation. In collaboration with the esteemed Al Rayyan Hospitality Group, the project maintains the visual and cultural integrity of Souq Waqif, blending seamlessly into its historic surroundings.
Key Engineering Achievements
Robust Metal Structure: The restaurant’s framework features a durable metal structure that supports its retractable roof, providing stability and elegance. Large sliding windows and the retractable roof open fully, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the surrounding Souq Waqif landscape during mild seasons. This setup respects the character of the area, ensuring the restaurant integrates visually with the historic views.
Electrical and Lighting Systems: Custom lighting installations create a warm, inviting ambiance that complements the heritage style while enhancing visibility. The lighting design uses energy-efficient fixtures to balance function and aesthetics, accentuating architectural features without disrupting the traditional Souq Waqif atmosphere.
HVAC and Climate Control: To maintain comfort, advanced HVAC systems are integrated with the retractable roof, adapting automatically to outside temperatures. Strategically positioned air conditioning units keep the space cool during warm weather, while the open roof and sliding windows allow for natural ventilation, preserving the authentic feel of the location.
State-of-the-Art Kitchen Setup: The open kitchen features specialized cooking facilities, including a stone stove, charcoal grill, and tandoor oven, showcasing live cooking in an inviting, open-air setup. The kitchen includes efficient ventilation and exhaust systems to manage smoke and maintain air quality, allowing guests to enjoy their meals without distraction.
Rapid Execution: Despite its complexity, the project was completed within one and a half months, a testament to efficient design implementation and skilled team coordination. The project’s swift execution was essential to meet the operational goals while maintaining high standards.
Cultural and Heritage Significance
Al Matbakh captures the essence of Qatari hospitality within Souq Waqif’s historic environment, creating an atmosphere that blends tradition with modern luxury. Its design and placement respect Souq Waqif’s heritage architecture, adding a unique dining experience while preserving the cultural landscape that defines the area.
Al Matbakh is a prime example of engineering excellence that respects cultural heritage, using thoughtful design to integrate with its surroundings while providing guests with modern comforts. This project highlights the ability to deliver high-quality, heritage-conscious work within accelerated timelines, demonstrating respect for tradition alongside innovative execution.
